Iyengar Yoga

BKS Iyengar 1918 – 2014

The method of yoga we teach is called ‘Iyengar Yoga’ and is named after yoga master BKS Iyengar who helped made yoga very popular in the West. In 2004 Mr. Iyengar was named ‘one of the 100 most influential people in the world today’ by Time Magazine. Mr Iyengar comes from a long lineage of authentic yoga masters and started teaching westerners in the 50’s. Slowly Iyengar Yoga schools started to pop up here and there and there are now thousands of them all over the world.

Iyengar Yoga is well known for its emphasis on good alignment (we sometimes use props to help achieve this) and its slow, simple and step by step approach for beginners.

Our classes include restorative poses that strengthen the immune, respiratory, and nervous systems and help reduce stress levels.

Iyengar Yoga has a unique way of taking care of students’ injuries and medical conditions like neck, knee or back pain, sleep or digestive disorders, headaches and depression just to name a few.

Mr Iyengar passed away at the age of 95 in August 2014. Most of our teachers go to India regularly to further their own yoga practice and polish up their teaching skills with the Iyengar family.

“The rhythm of the body, the melody of the mind and the harmony of the soul create the symphony of life.” – BKS Iyengar
